In 1999, Serrano expanded its use of recycled water from the golf course, parks and greenbelts
to residents' front and backyards in order to conserve this most precious resource. The recycled
water is delivered through a series of purple-colored pipes that are separate from drinking water
pipelines - a system that puts Serrano in the forefront of the trend toward environmentally sensitive
development and greatly improves the community's ability to remain lush and green during normal
drought cycles.
Serrano received the National WateReuse Award of Merit from the WateReuse Foundation at its annual
symposium in Denver in September 2005. The award, given at the countrywide level, recognizes Serrano's
innovative and concerted efforts in using recycled water for the front and backyards of its homes,
as well as for golf courses and common areas. Serrano previously won the "Project of the Year" award
from the California WateReuse Association in 1998.
